Practice is over, and the play you drew on the team room board tonight is the best thing you have called all season. 2 comes off the big fella's screen and the lane opens like a door. You ran it twice. Layup, both times. You take one step back, look at the board, and leave it up so you will remember it.

Wednesday, 3:15 pm

The freshman team has the gym at 3:30. Somebody needed the board. The eraser does not ask whose play it is, and nobody took a picture. It is gone! You ask if anyone else took a picture, but nobody else did, that play like many others you had are gone and you rack your brain trying to remember it.

Thursday, 9:40 pm

Kitchen table. You redraw it from memory, and memory is a bad assistant coach. Was 2 in the corner or on the wing? Was it a horns set or did the big man come up from the block? You draw three versions and pick one. It is the wrong one, but you will not know until Friday night.
