Six plays a team can actually learn

A weekly flag league gives you one 30-minute practice, so the playbook has to fit the time you have. Six plays covers the calls a game asks for: a run, a quick game, a deep shot, motion, a cross and a one-side read. Here is a working set for NFL FLAG 5v5, each drawn on the play card with its read. Solid is a route, dashed is the ball, dotted is pre-snap motion.

CQBXYZ
12 Trips Right Corner

Three receivers on the right. Z breaks for the corner, Y holds the flat, X crosses deep behind both. Read the corner first; the flat is the checkdown.

CQBRBXY
13 Sweep Left

The handoff answer to a hard rush. The RB takes the sweep left while both receivers pull their defenders upfield and out of the lane. Legal anywhere outside the no-run zones.

CQBXYZ
14 Z Motion Wheel

Z motions across before the snap and turns upfield on the wheel. The motion is also your coverage test: if a defender chases Z across, it is man, and the wheel wins the sideline.

CQBXYZ
15 Double Outs

Both outside receivers break to the sideline at 5 yards while Z slants inside. The QB picks the softer side before the snap and throws on the break.

CQBXYZ
16 Mesh

X and Z cross underneath at the same shallow depth while Y clears the deep middle. Against man the cross forces two chasing defenders through the same spot; throw to the crosser that comes out clean, here Z.

CQBXYZ
17 Flood Right

Three levels on one side: Y on the corner over Z in the flat, X clearing the backside. A one-side read for a young QB: corner first, flat second, throw it away third.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are these 5v5 plays free to use?
Yes. Run them as drawn or redraw them in the play editor with your own numbers and names. The free plan is the full play editor with one playbook and unlimited plays.
How many plays does a 5v5 flag team need?
Start with a set your team can rep in the practice time you actually get, which in most weekly leagues is about 30 minutes. Six plays your team knows beats twenty they have seen once; add more as the set gets mastered.
Do these plays work for 7v7?
The concepts carry, but these six are drawn for 5v5. ClickPlays also ships the high school 7v7 field (100 by 40, FHSAA), and the 7v7 set is on its own page.
Can I change a route?
Yes. Every play here is a normal drawing in the play editor: move a player, redraw a route, rename, renumber, reprint.
